Second South Africa Tour, August 2026

A marvelous two-week ASAP-sponsored tour of South Africa will be led by Dr. Kevin Dean, an ASAP board member. Kevin organized our 2024 tour featured in the video and is a pro, having led 18 study tours to South Africa for West Chester University students!

The group will meet the passionate director (Maria Nienaber) and coaches from the Young Children Program at ASAP’s nonprofit partner PEN. They will visit two toy libraries and a range of formerly informal daycares at various stages of becoming effective preschools. The group will be impressed by the excellence evident in all aspects of this mission. Their itinerary includes the Apartheid Museum and the sprawling Soweto Township where our 9th Toy Library opened July 15th, 2026. A participant from the Truth & Reconciliation Commission will share how this reparation initiative helped to heal the traumatic injuries of apartheid’s brutal, racist oppression.

The tour includes a safari, visits to Table Mountain, the Cape of Good Hope, a penguin colony, a winery, the impactful District VI museum, and of course Robben Island, the prison home of Nelson Mandela.

It is not clear this will be an annual trip but if South Africa is on your bucket list, please reach out to:  Drkevinwdean@gmail.com.

The tour group will visit preschools we serve in different settings. They will visit a few rural schools. A few inner-city preschools can use the rooftop for teaching and gross motor activities! Some schools are in overcrowded, urban apartment settings where it is not possible to take the children outside.
